The detainees, unable to understand the Russian-language contracts, assumed the jobs were army-related but within Russia. Fearing deportation to their home countries, where their lives could be at risk, many signed the contracts. It was only upon their arrival at a military camp near the Ukrainian border that they realized they were being sent to fight.

Somalia’s Radio Kulmiye reported that at least 60 Somali nationals were being held in Russian detention centers, with military recruiters approaching them. This situation has drawn international attention and concern from human rights activists.
