Bethlehem Cancels Christmas Festivities in Solidarity with Gaza

Bethlehem, a city that annually revels in its historic connection to the nativity story, is marking this Christmas season in a markedly different tone. In a significant departure from its traditional, joyous celebrations, all festive activities have been canceled. This year, the city stands in solidarity with the people of Gaza, who are enduring the hardships of an ongoing conflict.

“Nativity under the Rubble” – A Striking Art Installation

The centerpiece of Bethlehem’s Christmas decor, the vibrant Christmas tree in Manger Square, has been replaced by a moving art installation titled “Nativity under the Rubble.” Inaugurated by Palestinian Minister of Tourism Rula Maayah and Bethlehem Mayor Hana Hananiyeh, this artwork presents the nativity scene amidst the ruins of a demolished building, symbolizing the struggles faced in Gaza.

Bethlehem’s Message to the World

Rula Maayah articulated Bethlehem’s stance, contrasting its somber mood with the global Christmas celebrations. “Bethlehem is celebrating Christmas from the rubble, not like all other people in the world,” she stated, underscoring the city’s empathy and unity with the suffering in Gaza.

Echoes of the Nativity in Current Events

Mayor Hana Hananiyeh highlighted striking similarities between the nativity story from the Bible and the present circumstances in Gaza. He compared the plight of Palestinian families being forcibly displaced to the journey of the Holy Family fleeing King Herod. Emphasizing this comparison, he urged the global community to take notice and act against the injustices occurring in Gaza and the West Bank.

The Heavy Toll of the Conflict

The conflict, which intensified following a border crossing by Hamas gunmen on October 7, has had a devastating impact. Over 20,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 53,000 wounded in the effort to counter Hamas. Despite calls from the international community for a ceasefire, Israel has resolved to continue its operations until its objectives are achieved.

A Global Call for Peace and Justice

As Bethlehem marks a reflective Christmas, its message extends beyond its borders, spotlighting the plight of Palestinians and the urgent need for peace and justice in the region. The city’s decision to forego its festive traditions is a powerful statement of solidarity and a call for awareness and action.
