The peace summit will bring together 107 countries: who will attend and what the leaders will talk about

On June 15–16, Switzerland  will host the World Summit, to which representatives from 107 countries have already announced their participation. An important goal of the summit is to find constructive solutions and coordinated actions to solve global challenges and achieve sustainable development.

Global Peace Summit scheduled for June 15-16, 2024 in Switzerland

The venue chosen was Bürgenstock, located near the Swiss city of Lucerne.

Leaders from all countries of the world were invited to the Peace Summit. In addition, the working principles of this event were developed and agreed upon during a series of international meetings organized by the OP to process the peace initiative proposed by Ukraine.

Preparatory measures for the Peace Summit began by Ukraine and Switzerland on January 16, 2024. It is worth noting that the US government is also involved in these efforts.

The presence of leaders from all countries  allows us to discuss the most pressing issues and find agreed upon approaches to solving them. The participating countries are also considering possibilities for enhancing global collaboration and conflict resolution to ensure peace and stability in the global community.

Focus and mission: what to expect from the Peace Summit

The President of Ukraine has repeatedly emphasized the importance of the Global Peace Summit as a platform for dialogue on strategies to achieve a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace for the country in accordance with the UN Charter and the principles of international law. Zelensky also explained that the summit is aimed at developing a framework to achieve this goal and stimulate the future peace process.

Among other planned issues on the agenda, the following three main aspects also appear:

– ensuring energy and nuclear security;

– guaranteeing free navigation;

– organizing the exchange of prisoners, including everything for everyone and the return of deported children.

How many countries will take part in the upcoming Peace Summit?

It is known that the following countries have confirmed their participation in the Peace Summit: • Australia, • Austria, • Albania, • Belgium, • Greece, • Georgia, • Denmark, • Ireland, • Iceland, • Spain, • Italy, • Cape Verde, • Canada, • Ivory Coast, • Latvia, • Lithuania, • Liechtenstein, • Luxembourg, • Malawi, • Moldova, • Netherlands, • Germany, • Norway, • South Korea, • North Macedonia, • Poland, • Portugal , • Romania, • Slovakia, • Slovenia, • Philippines, • Finland, • France, • Croatia, • Czech Republic, • Chile, • Sweden, • Japan.

Furthermore, the participation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel, and Council of Europe Secretary General Maria Pejčinović-Burić has been confirmed for the Peace Summit. Additionally, the Pope and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will also be in attendance.

Ukraine has invited representatives from various countries, but official confirmation of the participation of state leaders has not yet been received. Meanwhile, the presidents of Brazil and South Africa refused to attend the Peace Summit. In addition, on May 31 it became known that the delegation from China would not take part in the event due to the absence of Russia.

Pakistani representatives may also miss attending the Peace Summit. Media reports say the country is likely to continue its position of neutrality. Hungary, Singapore and Timor-Leste have not yet decided on their participation in the event.

Does the US plan to attend the world summit?

On June 3, 2024, the White House announced that US Vice President Kamala Harris and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan are slated to participate in the global summit. The Vice President will convey the US administration’s support, under President Joe Biden, for Ukraine’s endeavors to secure a fair and enduring peace grounded on sovereignty and territorial integrity, in line with the principles outlined in the UN Charter, as stated in the official announcement. The suspected reason for Biden’s absence may be related to a planned campaign fundraiser in California. Media reports that Biden is expected to attend the event along with George Clooney, Julia Roberts and other celebrities.
